Adult Retreat Opportunities
Vatican Council II calls ALL people to holiness (Lumen Gentium #39). A significant means to holiness, i.e., living the attitudes and actions of Jesus, is an annual retreat. A retreat offers you an opportunity to reflect upon your priorities and connect more deeply with Christ in a quiet setting away from the distractions of everyday life.
There are many different types of retreats so you can choose what is most appropriate for your spiritual growth and development. St. Margaret Mary Parish offers the following retreats. For additional information and/or an application form, please call Sr. Madelyn Gould, 630-369-0777.
Advent At-Home Directed Retreat:
A directed retreat is a personalized experience. Instead of retreat talks given to an entire group, you meet individually each day/evening for ½ hr. with a spiritual director at a time that is convenient for you. How does this take place at SMM? A team of certified Spiritual Directors will come to SMMP for five days. The retreat, which is done at home, will begin with a short prayer service from 7:00-8:00 pm on Sunday.
During the five days, each person on the retreat will meet for a half-hour conversation with a retreat director. The conversations will be held at the parish during the day or evening, at your convenience. Your retreat director will suggest material for you to pray with and give you assistance on how to pray with Scripture. The only requirement is your commitment to pray for approximately one half-hour each day of the retreat and meet with your retreat director at a time that is convenient for both of you.
The next retreat will take place during the first week of Advent 2019.
Weekend Preached Retreat:
Two Preached Retreats are offered annually for St. Margaret Mary Parishioners – one for men; one for women. The retreats are conducted at Cardinal Stritch Retreat House in Mundelein. Each person has her/his private room and bathroom. Al Gustafson, Fr. Jim Osendorf and Sr. Madelyn Gould offer the conferences. After each halfhour session, there is optional time for discussion and time for private, quiet reflection. Prepared Morning/Evening Prayer and Sunday Mass are offered. These retreats begin on Friday evening at 7:30 PM and conclude on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
The next women’s retreat will take place in February 2020.
The next men’s retreat will take place in March 2020.
Come and find ways to deepen your connection with God in everyday life!
St. Margaret Mary Church is blessed to be surrounded by several local retreat houses. If the foregoing retreats do not meet your needs, the schedules of retreats in the area are available. Many are posted on the bulletin board outside the Religious Education Offices. Individual retreats at these retreat houses can also be arranged. For further assistance in scheduling a retreat, call Sr. Madelyn (630-369-0777).
Ongoing spiritual direction is a great way to keep your retreat experience alive. Spiritual direction is a one-on-one meeting with a trained guide during which the directee reflects on her/his spiritual journey. The agenda for Spiritual Direction includes anything that impacts your spiritual life – relationships, life situations, values, and one’s prayer life. If interested, call Sr. Madelyn for a list of certified Spiritual Directors who minister at our parish and in the area.
Days of Quiet:
The next Day of Quiet is being offered Friday, May 17, 2019 (9:00 AM-3:00 PM). The day will be held at St. Procopius Abbey. Watch the bulletin for details. Please call 630-369-0777 to register.
Even in stressful times like these, we can build a faith so vibrant that we experience peace and joy. That faith lights our way and allows us to radiate the peace of Christ to others. For centuries people have renewed their connection to a loving God by setting aside time to retreat. Come for an evening, a day, a weekend or longer. Retreats today come in all shapes and sizes, to suit even the most demanding schedule.
